The Golden Rule of Synthetic Wig Care

Synthetic fibers are not human hair — and that's actually an advantage. Your wig's style is permanently set into the fibers, so you don't need to restyle it after washing. Follow these simple rules and your BMOU wig will stay fresh for months.

How Often Should You Wash?

Wash your wig every 8-10 wears, or sooner if you notice product buildup or dullness. Over-washing wears down the fibers faster — synthetic wigs don't produce natural oils, so less is more.

Step-by-Step Washing

  1. Detangle first. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, starting from the ends and working up to the roots.
  2. Use cold water. Hot water damages synthetic fibers. Fill a basin with cold water and add a small amount of mild shampoo — baby shampoo works great.
  3. Soak, don't scrub. Submerge the wig and gently swish it around. Don't rub, twist, or wring the fibers.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Use cold water until all shampoo is gone. Leftover product makes the fibers dull and stiff.
  5. Condition lightly. Use a synthetic-safe conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends only — avoid the cap base. Rinse well.
  6. Air dry on a wig stand. Gently squeeze out excess water with a towel (don't wring). Place the wig on a stand and let it air dry completely before wearing.

Daily Maintenance

  • Detangle after every wear. Finger-comb or use a wide-tooth comb. Start from the bottom, work up. 30 seconds saves you from matting.
  • Store on a wig stand. Keeps the cap shape and prevents tangling. If you don't have one, store flat in its original box.
  • Avoid friction. Don't sleep in your wig. Don't wear it under hoods, hats, or against rough fabrics for long periods.

What NOT to Do

  • No heat tools. Curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers will melt synthetic fibers. Your wig's style is permanent — embrace it.
  • No hot water. Even warm water can warp the fibers and ruin the pre-set style.
  • No regular hair products. Drugstore hairsprays, gels, and serums are formulated for human hair and will gunk up synthetic fibers. Use products labeled "synthetic-safe" only.
  • No brushing when wet. Wet synthetic fibers are fragile. Always detangle dry, not wet.

How Long Will Your BMOU Wig Last?

With proper care, a BMOU synthetic wig lasts 3-6 months of regular wear. Rotating between two or three wigs extends the lifespan significantly — and at $39-$79 each, owning a small collection is totally doable.

Signs It's Time for a New Wig

  • Excessive shedding (some shedding is normal, but clumps aren't)
  • Fibers feel rough or straw-like even after washing
  • Tangling that doesn't come out with gentle combing
  • The cap or straps lose elasticity
